My Business Isn’t Big Enough For Cyber Criminals

Nov 10, 2021

Big corporations are obviously a target for cyber criminals. They store vast amounts of data and are a huge source of financial gain for cyber criminals. However, cyber criminals are increasingly targeting small business and 75% of cyber-attacks target small businesses.

Small businesses are more vulnerable to attacks because they often don’t have much of a budget for security measures and don’t fully appreciate the scale of the threat they face. Many small businesses still believe they’re too small for cyber criminals to care about and so don’t take the appropriate security measures to protect themselves, and this vulnerability makes them even more appealing to cyber criminals.

What can be done?

Cybersecurity is really a question of business continuity. Its understanding how long your business can survive without IT, whether it be minutes, hours, or days. From there its then about formulating a budget based on how much it would cost the business if your IT were down and investing this in proper Cybersecurity.

It’s important that small businesses take cyber security seriously, as they’re not immune to cyber-attacks. The priority for any business is to ensure the security basics are covered. There are some simple changes that business can make today to help secure their business, such as:

  • Requiring and using strong passwords
  • Use Multi-Factor Authentication wherever possible
  • Training staff can also help to guard against opportunistic threats

However, to ensure your business is properly secured and safe from the consequences that come with a cyber-attack, such as damaged reputation, financial loss and loss of customer trust, it’s important to have someone who can take care of and monitor your IT. Whether this be an in-house department or an MSP, having a dedicated team who can keep your IT secure is the best way to protect your business.
