Today, the world is constantly flooded with Cybersecurity news, and for good reason.

In 2021, IT Governance reported there had been 1,243 security incidents, which accounted for 5,126,930,507 breached records. That represents an 11% increase in security incidents compared to 2020.

But, despite the worrying statistics, there are still many companies who dint see themselves as a target for cyber criminals. These companies believe they’re not big enough for cyber criminals to be interested in, and so they don’t take the appropriate cybersecurity measures.

Overconfidence in security, or not seeing yourself as a target for cybercriminals actually creates opportunities for hackers.

Here are 5 common security misconceptions many businesses have, how they put them in danger and, most importantly, how they be resolved

  1. “Cybercriminals aren’t interested in us”

Many businesses think they’re not a target for Cybercriminals as they don’t believe hackers will be interested in their data, or that they’re too small to be worth Cybercriminal’s time. But everyone is a target for Cybercriminals. They don’t care about your business size, or how much data you hold, they will still see you as a target.

  1. “We have everything covered”

Security is complex, having everything covered is a difficult task. Even if you have all of the correct security infrastructure in place, your staff can still put you at threat. Human error is the biggest threat when it comes to phishing attacks, you can find more about this here.

Technology constantly evolving, having your staff fully trained in understanding cybersecurity and the risks associated is the best way to help keep your business secure and protected.

  1. “Security is an issue for IT, it doesn’t concern the CEO”

Again, another incorrect assumption that will leave your business vulnerable to threats.

A successful cybersecurity attack is far more than just a technical setback; it damages brand reputation, ruins customer trust, and leads to financial losses. These reasons all make Cybersecurity a top concern for CEOs, as it has the potential to ruin a business

  1. “Security isn’t a product; it’s a practice”
Many businesses, when addressing security, do so for compliance. However, ticking a compliance check box is only one side of security. Regular employee training and building a cyber conscious culture is an important side to security that is often left out. Making Cybersecurity a real focus for your company is very important.

  1. “Cybercrime will never have a physical impact”

Cybercrime has shifted direction and has become more physical than ever before. Whether it is disrupting the supply chain with a ransomware attack or raids in response to stolen data, organisations cannot afford to continue to underestimate the real-world impact of cybercrime.

There are many common misconceptions about security, and these were just a few of them. Not being clued up about cybersecurity can put your business at great risk. Take cybersecurity seriously and make it a key component within your business. Using a Managed Service Provider (MSP) is a great way to keep on top of your security and protect your business.
