Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is an extra step you can take to ensure the security on your internet accounts. 2FA is becoming increasingly supported by many platforms, and there’s a good reason for it.
What is 2FA?
2FA protects your entry point for something. Like your login to your email, your online banking, or even the login on your laptop.
2FA makes it more difficult for hackers to access your accounts even if they know your password.
It works by requiring multiple things to login. Usually at least two of the following three:
- Something you know – i.e., a password
- Something you are – i.e., a fingerprint
- Something you have – i.e., onetime pin generated by an app on your phone.
Why should you use 2FA?
2FA came about from a need to increase security because passwords have become much less secure.
Hackers have become much better at gaining access to your passwords, putting your accounts at risk. 2FA however ensures that even if your passwords are compromised, it wouldn’t lead to an account takeover.
If you don’t use 2FA, then your accounts are much more vulnerable, and the likelihood of an account takeover increases significantly. Therefore, encouraging use wherever possible throughout your business is essential.
